Kiwanian Men and Women of the Year

Kennewick Kiwanians, lieutenant governors in their red jackets and other Tri-City Kiwanis members, turned out in large numbers to pay their respects to Glenn Wheeler February 27th. Glenn Wheeler, who we fondly called Colonel, passed away at 93 on December 19, 2009. His memorial service was held February 27 at the First Christian Church in Kennewick. A decorated and twice wounded World War II Army officer, Wheeler received a field promotion from General Douglas MacArthur, following fierce fighting in taking back the Philippines in 1945. To us he will always be remember as one of Kennewick's most faithful and likeable Kiwanis members.
Glenn Wheeler achieved something that few of us have, 50 years as a Kennewick Kiwanian, proudly serving his community.
The Colonel was used to command and it served him well in Kiwanis.
Pastor Ron Yates asked Glynn to join him at the Kennewick Kiwanis in 1959. He immediately became a fixture with Kiwanis and in a short time worked his way up to president of the club.
In 1980 he ran for lieutenant governor and one of his cherished accomplishments as lieutenant governor was helping to charter and inaugurate a new Kiwanis club and the Tri-City Industry (TCI) club in Richland. He was the guest of honor at the 25th anniversary of TCI and said that he was proud of his involvement.
He also did little things with Kiwanis, like working for years as a supervisor at the Benton-Franklin County Fair, the annual 4th of July celebration at Columbia Park and a host of other big and little Kiwanis projects. He loved to come to the weekly meetings and did so almost to the end.

He was a true American patriot and short refrain from a poem "American For Me" fits the colonel.
So it's home again, and home again, America for me!
My heart is turning home again, and there I long to be,
In the land of youth and freedom beyond the ocean bars,
Where the air is full of sunlight and the flag is full of stars!

His obituary follows:
Longtime Kennewick resident and decorated veteran Glynn "Colonel" E. Wheeler died Saturday (December 19) from complications of a stroke he suffered earlier in the week. He was 93. Wheeler had the rare distinction of getting a battlefield promotion during WWII in the Pacific Theater from Gen. Douglas MacArthur in 1945, the same year he received a Purple Heart for bravery in combat. In 1962, he also got a Bronze Star.
Wheeler briefly served in Korea and was posted in Germany from 1952-55. He retired from the Army in 1957 as a lieutenant colonel, and started a business in Kennewick, said his daughter July Wheeler of Kennewick. He was very proud of serving his country, she said.
Wheeler always cherished his meeting with MacArthur, said friend and fellow Kiwanian Bob Woehler.
Wheeler was a 50-year member of the Kiwanis Club of Kennewick.
Wheeler, who owned Roto Rooter in Kennewick, also served on the Benton County Park Board for several decades, he said.
The park board named a road near Two Rivers Park in Finley after him in 1996 to honor his services, his daughter said. She said her father also was active in the Kennewick First Christian Church and held several offices statewide, including positions on the board.
Wheeler was born in Tonasket in 1916. He grew up in Union Gap and graduated from Yakima High School in 1935.
He lied about his age to join the National Guard in 1933 to be able to serve the nation, his daughter said. He married his wife Ellamae in 1939.
Wheeler will be cremated so that his ashes can be buried at a national cemetery with those of his wife Ellamae, who died in 2006.
Wheeler's son Mike, of Pasco, died in September, 2009.
Besides his daughter, survivors include four grandchildren.
Services will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 2:00p.m. at the Kennewick First Christian Church, located at 1921 S. Olympia.

The Kiwanis Club of Kennewick has honored Jim French, long time Kiwanis member and Kennewick businessman by naming a clinic for the SIGN project in his honor.
French, who had 50 years of perfect attendance at the Kennewick Kiwanis passed away in 2007.
His widow Kay French accepted the plaque from Kiwanis President Wayne Bell.
SIGN is the surgery implant for the healing of broken bones. This is a project of Dr. Lewis Zirkle Jr. of Richland and the SIGN international headquarters are based in Richland. Dr. Zirkle teaches third world country doctors the procedures for healing broken bones for children and adults. Otherwise, many people in 3rd World countries may be crippled for life.
The Kennewick Kiwanis club raised $15,000 that allowed it to finance a clinic in Niamey, the capitol of Niger in Africa. The plaque with Jim French’s name will be placed at the entrance of the SIGN Clinic .
SIGN has more than 200 programs throughout the developing world. More than 2,000 SIGN surgeons use the SIGN system on a daily basis to repair fractures largely caused by road traffic accidents. Since 1999 more than 50,000 patients have been treated with the SIGN system.
Kiwanis, an international service organization, has donated thousands of dollars to the SIGN program.

Art Carson, long time Kennewick Kiwanis member was honored with a cake for his 52 years of services to the Kennewick Club. A retired architect, who help build Camp Kiwanis building, often honors other Kiwanis members for their longevity and perfect attendance. This was Art's turn to be honored as President Wayne Bell helped him showoff the cake.

The Kiwanis Club
.......... of Kennewick

President's
Corner

The Pres Speaks!

The Kiwanis Club of Kennewick will host a dinner/social event on Thursday, February 18th at Leo’s in downtown Kennewick.  This event is for Kiwanians, spouses, friends, family and prospective members of our club.  It will be a Buffet Dinner served between 6:00-6:30 p.m. at a cost of $22.00 per person.  Tickets for this event can be purchased from Laurie Tufford beginning February 2nd.  There will be no tickets sales after Tuesday, February 16th as we need an accurate count of those attending.  A short program and dessert will follow dinner.  Leo’s was selected because a number of club members have complimented the food at Leo’s.  Hope to see you there.

Thank you!   The club has contributed over $1380.00 in honor of past member Col. Glynn Wheeler who passed away in December.  As a result of your giving, the Club Foundation will offer a scholarship in Glynn’s name to a deserving high school Senior for the school year 2010-11.  I think Glynn would consider this an honor.  Contributions in Glynn’s name can still be made, see Laurie T.

Tickets, tickets, and more tickets.  Cathy Merrill Holle has agreed to sell our club’s tickets to the Vienna Boys’ Choir Concert on Tuesday, February 23rd.  A portion of or perhaps all our tickets sales will stay with our club.  I’ve been told hearing the Vienna Boys’ Choir may be a once in a lifetime opportunity.  They are coming to the Tri-Cities as part of the Community Concert Tri-Cities Program.  Their Monday performance sold out before Christmas with many people still wanting tickets.  Tuesday is the 2nd performance and thus the Kiwanis connection (our service to youth in the community).  Tickets are $20.00 per adult and $10.00 per student under the age of 22.  Call your friends, relatives, get your group together and see Cathy for tickets.  This is a great opportunity for our club.

In February our Division Council’s Past Lt. Governors’ are leading a membership drive.  Further information will follow.

On February 10th, our club hosts the Division Council meeting at Camp Kiwanis.  Dinner is served at 6:00 p.m. and the meeting begins at 6:30 p.m.  I hope to see many of our members attend.
